COLUMBUS: The Ohio prisons director calls the slain head of the Colorado Department of Corrections a professional and personal friend who was a caring and dedicated administrator.

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Gary Mohr says he spoke with Tom Clements as recently as Monday when they discussed issues surrounding executions.

Police say Clements was fatally shot around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home north of Colorado Springs.

Mohr said he and Clements talked about the personal toll that overseeing executions can take.

Mohr told Ohio prisons staff in a letter Wednesday morning the shooting is a reminder of the serious nature of corrections’ workers responsibilities on and off the job.

Mohr tells the Associated Press he hasn’t yet considered any security he might have to undertake.
