Akron Summit County Public Library Mobile Services Manager, Jon Hershey. (Phil Masturzo/Akron Beacon Journal)

Books deliver knowledge

Name: Jon Hershey.

Age: 48.

Hometown: Akron.

Role: Manager of Akron-Summit County Public Library’s bookmobile.

He says education is the true revolution, and providing access to the library no matter where people live, their income or disability delivers access to democracy.

“We go everywhere. So many people don’t have access to the traditional library because they’re hidden away, out of sight, out of mind, almost forgotten. If they don’t have access, we bring it to them.

“The concept of the bookmobile being old-fashioned and rural is wrong. ...We also have many sites at sheltered workshops for the Board of Developmental Disabilities, Head Start and a program for new immigrants. ... One thing that we’re real proud of is the stops at schools associated with each of the major faiths: Christian, the Jewish Center and the Islamic Academy. Now that’s real diversity!”
